Having a Great Hair Day?

Posted by Marianne Wilson on

Eczema and allergy sufferers deserve great hair too!

If you love great hair and want safe, natural styling products, take a look at our Suncoat Hairspray, Mousse, Gel and Calming Serum. Made by a chemist with a passion for naturally formulated products that are kind to human health, the Suncoat ingredients list avoids the chemical nasties that can all too often cause problems for skin and hair.

… and then there’s the aerosol can. Aerosol propellent, as well as the synthetic fragrances that aerosol products frequently contain, can cause havoc for those prone to asthma, sinus issues and MCS. They also emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which contribute massively to asthma-inducing ground level smog. Suncoat hairspray and mousse come in pump spray bottles which require no aerosol propellent and contain absolutely no synthetic fragrances.

… what chemical nasties are we talking about? There are a few, so let’s explain what they are – and NONE OF THESE are in any Suncoat hair styling product.

Alcohol
Alcohol is a very common ingredient in hairspray type styling products. It’s used because it helps hairsprays to dry quickly on your hair. There’s no doubt that alcohol has ‘quick-dry’ properties. The downside is it can also dry out your hair, stripping it of its natural moisture and making it look less healthy and luscious. If you see any of these ingredients on your hairspray ingredients list, you’re looking at alcohol that can make your hair dry and brittle; (Suncoat products contain none of them):

·      SD alcohol

·      Ethanol

·      Isopropyl alcohol

Fragrances
There are a lot of sensitive individuals out there who just can’t tolerate the scent of artificial fragrance. Artificial fragrances can trigger respiratory allergies and can also irritate the delicate skin of your scalp. If you’re someone who runs for the hills as soon as you get a whiff of chemical fragrance, go for unscented or naturally scented options. The Suncoat range is a great place to start.

Preservatives
There are two main culprits here which are lurking on the ingredients lists of a lot of regular hair styling products, neither of which can be found in Suncoat products.

·      Parabens

·      Formaldehyde

Many people choose to avoid Parabens, which are used in so many cosmetics products. They are somewhat controversial and have been linked to hormone disruption. Look out for terms such as methylparaben or propylparaben.

Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde chemicals are often present in hair styling products to extend shelf life. Sadly though, they are known irritants. Formaldehyde can cause skin and eye irritation, so if you are a sensitive individual, it's best to steer clear of them. Look out for formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, or imidazolidinyl urea on ingredients lists.

Silicones
Additives such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone are examples of silicones, which you will not find in Suncoat hair products. These are added to give a smooth, shiny appearance to your hair. The downside is that the build-up of these additives over time can make your hair look lifeless and limp. Not the look you were going for? Check out products for volume and hold based on silicone-free formulations.

PVP/VA Copolymer
There’s no doubt that large scale manufacturers can achieve a strong hold in hair products cheaply with PVP/VA Copolymer ingredients. The downside for users is that it’s tough to wash out, which can easily cause buildup on your hair and scalp. So your look can turn lifeless rather than lustrous. All Suncoat hair styling products are formulated without PVP/VA Copolymer, for the long term health of your hair and scalp.

At Allergy Best Buys we like to stock great products for sensitive people. We love the expertise and philosophy behind Suncoat and hope they can help you have a Great Hair Day Every Day!
