Question: I read your article on Eyelid Allergy in last month´s “Update” and wanted to know if I have Eye Allergies can I just use over-the-counter Eye Drops?

Answer: Many over-the-counter allergy eye drops contain topical decongestants and should only be used for a few days at a time. When topical decongestants are used long-term, a medical condition called conjunctivitis medicamentosa can develop. Symptoms may include an increase in eye redness and irritation, with more dependence on the eye drop for relief so you should check the label carefully.

Friday 28^th October “Allergy for the Emergency Physician”.
Recent data has suggested a 350% in hospital admissions for anaphylaxis in under a decade. Food, venom and drug allergy are common presentations to the Emergency Department as are patients who believe a whole range of symptoms may be related to an allergy.

Other allergic disease such as asthma and eczema also present their own challenges to the emergency physician. This study day, held in collaboration with the College of Emergency Medicine, offers a unique opportunity to consider the presentation and treatment of allergic disease from the Emergency Physician's perspective. Camel-icious!

Camel
Camel´s milk tastes a bit salty and has about two per cent fat, compared to four per cent in cow´s milk, is lower in cholesterol and has five times as much Vitamin C. More importantly for anyone with lactose intolerance, a recent study has found camel´s milk is a safe alternative for children with cow´s milk allergy.

The children in a recent study at the Allergy-Immunology Clinic, Hamad Medical Corp, Doha, Qatar had a detailed history taken, plus a medical examination, a complete blood count with differential count, total serum IgE, and specific IgE test and skin prick test (SPT) to cow´s milk. The study found that children with a positive SPT to cow´s milk had a negative SPT to camel´s milk.

Of 35 children who were enrolled in the study, 7% had a positive SPT to camel´s milk and 28 (80%) had a negative SPT to camel´s milk. All the children with negative SPT to camel´s milk took camel´s milk with no reaction. Given that SPT is a reliable clinical test, the scientists concluded that these children could take camel´s milk as a safe alternative to cow´s milk.

United Arab Emirates-based firm Camelicious says it is only waiting on checks by EU health and hygiene inspectors and hopes to begin exporting its camel milk to Europe next year

River Cottage Gluten Free Course

Allergies and the Office

Recent concern that laser printers may produce pollutants that can lodge deeply in our lungs reminds us that the air in our work environment is potentially harmful. Modern office buildings are not only built with toxic chemicals but these days, in order to conserve energy, are also built tight as a drum with little natural ventilation, leaving allergens and irritants with no place to go.

Within the offices, materials and equipment usually contains a chemical brew of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene and tricholorethylene that are outgassed from paper, inks, furniture, carpet, paints, wall coverings, cleaning materials and floor tiles. Copiers and laser printers add to the mix by producing microscopic dust particles and sometimes ozone. Indoor air pollution is consequently often greater than the air outside.

What can be done?

Ventilate your work area by opening a window or door, if possible.
Move copier/laser printers to a well-ventilated space and/or place an exhaust fan near the printer.
Turn off copier or laser printers when not in use or purchase new equipment that is energy efficient and shuts down when not in use
