LATEST FIGURES
show the dire state of allergy services in the UK. This week the
House of Lords Committee on Science and Technology issued a damning
report on the state of Britain's allergy services saying that both
in terms of training and the delivery of services Britain is now
lagging well behind much of the EU. With the country in the grip of
an allergy epidemic there are simply far too few allergy specialists
to go round.
The NHS has just 29 consultants
specialising in allergy, each responsible for more than two million
patients, compared with about 100,000 for most specialities. The
figures reflect the low priority given to allergy services in the
UK, despite as many as one in three of us developing some form of
allergy during our lifetime, and the number of hospital admissions
for potentially life-threatening reactions (anaphylaxis) rising
sevenfold in the past decade.
You can find your nearest NHS
allergy clinic here, but you will need a referral from your GP
and the clinics generally only see people at the more severe end of
the allergy scale. Waiting times tend to be lengthy.
I am trying to put together a
directory of Allergists who are available for private consultation
and if any of you can give names and contact details of any you know
or whose services you have used please send me an e-mail here. |

NEW! Be among the first to try Silvatec™, the new cleansing bar with silver ions.
Silver is a powerful antimicrobial agent, proven in clinical studies
to be very effective at killing harmful bacteria.
|
 |
|
This makes Silvatec™ ideal for anyone with eczema, acne or
perspiration problems. Philippa, our tester for skin and eczema
products, was impressed by the speed with which the broken and
infected outbreaks on her face healed up. Regular use of Silvatec™ will help to build a barrier between
your skin and bacteria. This protection is vital for anyone,
especially the elderly, who may spend time in hospital. Last month
the Daily Mail Good Health pages recommended Silvatec™ as one of the Five of the Best Health
Aids with Silver. Read more about this excellent new product here. |

SEASONAL HAY FEVER SUFFERERS in
the Northern Hemisphere can usually breathe freely now that the
pollen season is over. But allergenic mould spores in Autumn can
present a further hazard, so those whose symptoms are perennial
rather than seasonal will be pleased that the AllergyBestBuys range
of products for allergic rhinitis (to give hay fever its proper
name) is in stock all year round. This is good news too for our many
customers in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa who are
entering their pollen season now. Grass pollens in particular are a
major problem to allergy sufferers in South Africa where pollen
levels peak from October to January, but are present almost all year
round especially in some parts of the country. Allergenic grass
species found in South Africa include: Bermuda, Perennial Rye,
Kikuyu, Annual meadow, Cock's foot, Sweet vernal, Wild oat and the
Kweek species. Click here now to browse our range of masks, air purifiers, personal ionisers, pollen blockers, window filters, cotton tissues, wrap-round specs and more. |

TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE to support
the National Eczema Society.
Taking part in an overseas event to raise money is
an exciting and challenging way of supporting the National Eczema
Society. Challenges can include walking, running, cycling, horse (or
even camel) riding in distant countries including China, Mexico,
Cuba and India. You don't have to be super fit to take part but the
events are physically challenging. Training and fitness is a must.
But, this is not a race – the aim is for you to complete the
challenge at your own pace. Whilst there will be people of differing
levels of fitness on the trek you will find that there is a great
sense of team spirit and support for everyone to complete the
Challenge. Here are a few of the Challenges on offer:
Norway Dog Sledding in the Land of the
Midnight Sun (Moderately Challenging) 10th - 16th February
2008 An odyssey on ice, the teamwork between man and dog
means this is a totally unique experience. Sledding over 250km from
our base camp into the wilds of Norway, the most northern country in
Europe, this trek will prove the ultimate challenge for many
participants. Our route begins 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle,
with the finish being almost 200 miles within it. Each participant
will have his/her own sled and a team of 4-6 huskies.
Trekking across the Sahara (Fairly
Challenging) 23rd February - 2nd March 2008 The
Sahara Desert conjures up images of vast unending sands, desert
oases and star-encrusted skies. This harsh environment is the
perfect setting for a charity event. It offers the challenge of
trekking and camping in an extreme location surrounded by
breathtaking scenery and a fascinating culture. Afterwards explore
the imperial city of Marrakech with its bustling central square and
exotic traditions.
Extreme Challenge in Bolivia (Extremely
Challenging) 12th July - 3rd August 2008 Charity
Climb up Bolivia summits led by Simon Yates of 'Touching the Void'
fame. The Cordillera Real is close to La Paz and is home to
countless alpine peaks at moderate to high altitude. The first two
days are spent acclimatising around La Paz, and visiting ancient
Inca ruins and Lake Titicaca. Then we trek to the Condoriri Base
camp, which is surrounded by some of the most beautiful peaks in the
area. From here we will climb Little Illusion (5,250 m), before
attempting the more challenging Little Alpamayo (5,350 m). Once
acclimatised, we turn our attention towards Huyana Potosi (6,088 m)
and Illimani (6,463 m). Both of these peaks require a single high
altitude camp. The summit days provide inspiring and sometimes
exposed climbing with stunning views stretching from Peru across to
the Amazon Basin.
People from all walks of life and of all ages
may take part in these or any of the other amazing Challenge events
on offer. From 18 onwards, everyone is welcome as long as you are
fit and healthy enough to do the Challenge. Go as a group, go on
your honeymoon or go on your Gap Year. Face the Challenge and raise
money for The Eczema Society. For an information pack click here.
