BANNED. You may remember our Christmas issue of
Update which warned about allergic reactions to dimethyl fumarate
(DMF) a mould- inhibitor that was found in sofas imported from
China. Affected sofas were sold across Europe, with problems
reported in Finland, Poland, Sweden and especially France as well as
the UK. The sachets of DMF caused agonising skin reactions in
thousands of people.
The European Commission is now banning any products containing
DMF from entering Europe. The new law, which comes into force in
May, means all shops that have sold affected items will have to
issue a full recall. UK authorities have yet to decide exactly how
that will work here. EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva
is behind the new law. She said that "From 1st May 2009, DMF will
not have any place in UK homes or in European
homes”.

WALK FOR
SKIN and help raise funds for important research into skin
disease. The British Skin Foundation is organizing eleven walks
around the country on Sundays in May. Walks are 3-6miles long and
make a great day out for the whole family. Registration is free

INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND
ASTHMA. A study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University
has found an association between increasing levels of indoor
particulate matter pollution and the severity of asthma symptoms
among children.
Fine particles measure 2.5 microns
or less in size (approximately 1/30th the diameter of a human hair)
and can penetrate deep into the body's respiratory system. Coarse
particles fall between 2.5 and 10 microns in diameter. These larger
particles can also enter the respiratory system and can be produced
indoors through activities such as cooking and dusting.
"We found that substantial increases
in asthma symptoms were associated both with higher indoor
concentrations of fine particles and with higher indoor
concentrations of coarse particles," said Meredith C. McCormack, MD,
MHS, lead author of the study and an instructor with the Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine.
"Children spend nearly 80 percent of
their time indoors, which makes understanding the effects of indoor
air very important," said co-author, Gregory B. Diette, MD, an
associate professor in the School of Medicine and co-director of the
Center for Childhood Asthma in the Urban Environment.
"Improving indoor air quality and
lowering indoor particulate matter concentrations may provide
additional means of improving asthma health, especially for children
living in inner cities," added co-author, Patrick Breysse, PhD, a
professor in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and
co-director of the Center for Childhood Asthma in the Urban
Environment.

AllergyBestbuys recommends the AirFree Air Steriliser and the new LightAir Ionflow 50 Ionising Air Purifer. Click on

COELIAC VACCINE a step closer. Speaking at a
recent Coeliac UK conference Dr Bob Anderson from The Walter and
Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia described how he and
his team have identified the toxic elements of gluten, creating the
potential for a vaccine therapy to suppress or prevent gluten
toxicity.
Dr Anderson who is joint founder and CEO of Nexpep Pty Ltd, the
company developing the coeliac vaccine, says that they are currently
raising capital for a peptide-based therapeutic vaccine and intends
to commence a Phase 1 clinical trial in the first half of 2009.
In common with traditional desensitisation therapy for allergy, a
peptide-based therapeutic vaccine administered in small doses over a
period could induce immune tolerance to gluten and has the potential
to treat about 80% of people with Coeliac Disease.
