NEW additive
alert website. A new website created by campaigners at The Food
Commission can help to identify foods that contain additives that
are more likely than others to cause reactions in sensitive people.
The website, at
www.actiononadditives.com
lists over 100 foods, drinks and medicines which contain the suspect
food additives and users can also submit new products to add to
the list. Allergic reactions to flavour enhancers, food colourings
and to benzoates, nitrates and sulphites used as preservatives
include asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis, skin problems such as
hives, itching, rashes and swelling, digestive disorders such
as diarrhoea and colicky pains and nervous disorders such as hyperactivity
in children, insomnia and irritability. Meanwhile Professor Brostoff’s
book.The
Complete
Guide to Food Allergy & Intolerance remains the best ever
definitive guide to food-related reactions and contains a dedicated
appendix on additives. At only £6.99 this book is astonishingly
good value. Click
