Welcome to the first issue
of ‘Update’ for 2009 our monthly e-mail newsletter.
This month we have some interesting allergy news and views and
some special subscriber-only offers.
Firstly though I want to begin
by letting you know of a number of products in the AllergyBestBuys
range that will be going up in price. Several suppliers have
alerted us to price increases as a result of difficult currency
markets and I have listed those products affected here so that
if there’s any thing you need, you can buy before the
prices go up.

Buckwheat
allergies on the increase. Buckwheat is already established
as a “major potent allergen” in South East Asia, but
its growing use an ingredient in Europe - in noodles, for example
- means that exposure to this potential allergen is increasing.
A growing number of cases of buckwheat allergy, sometimes leading
to severe reactions, has been reported. Buckwheat is not a true
cereal as it is not a member of the grasses family, but is actually
related to sorrels, docks and bindweed. It is often used as a
filler for pillows as buckwheat husks are said to provide better
support for the neck and back, but it has been linked to allergy
symptoms when inhaled. Canadian researchers believe that inhaled
exposure may sensitize people via the respiratory tract, making
them more likely to suffer allergic reactions from other types
of exposure. |

Did
you read in the paper last week about the woman bitten
by a False Widow Spider that had got into her bed? Her immediate
allergic reaction led to a dash to hospital and emergency care.
These and other exotic insects are appearing more frequently in
the UK as a result, we are told, of global warming. |
|
| |
AllergyBestBuys
customers in Australia and elsewhere will doubtless be more aware
than we of the threat of bites and stings, but we recommend that
anyone who suffers from allergy to the venom of biting insects,
snakes, scorpions or fish should keep a Venom
Extractor in the first aid kit at home and take it on holiday
or Gap Year adventures. Check out our Natural
Insect Repellent Patches too! Click on the links for more
info and to buy. |

Can you help? Ruth Campbell is in the final
year of a Culinary Arts Management degree and as part of this
is trying to develop a ready-meal product that is free from
ingredients that commonly cause allergies or intolerances including
gluten, wheat, lactose, eggs, shellfish, nuts, sesame and celery.
As part of the research for this project she would welcome help
in filling out a brief questionnaire to discover your views
of products that are free from certain foods. There are only
7 questions and participation is anonymous.
Please e-mail ruthcampbell86@gmail.com
to ask for the questionnaire.
