EARLY HAYFEVER ALERT. Although it seems early, the hay fever season could start as early as next month triggered by the cold winter, experts have warned. Many sufferers are affected by tree pollen and the cold weather this year has encouraged the birch trees to pollinate early. Says Professor Jean Emberlin, director of The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit.

“Birches tend to pollinate more heavily every other year. This year it is likely to be high, starting to arrive in March with very high counts in many areas.” So now is the time to start desensitising with our Homeopathic Desensitisation Kit, a natural 2-year programme, treating like with like, to end the miseries of seasonal rhinitis. If you began the treatment last season you may need to buy more Pollens, but you should have enough Synergist from last year to see you through this one. Click here to order further supplies or, if you haven't tried homeopathic desensitisation before, here to learn more about this highly successful and economical non-drug treatment.

DID YOU SEE THIS? Our Natural Nail Polish Remover is a great hit with AllergyBestBuys customers with MCS or whose asthma is affected by the fumes of conventional removers. The Sunday Times “Style” section recently carried a recommendation for this unique product for a reader who wrote to say:I’m addicted to weekly manicures, but recently my nails have started to suffer and now peel easily. How can I return them to their former glory? Amanda, by email.

The Sunday Times replied: "Nasty solvents in conventional nail-polish removers can wreak havoc with nails, so try a more natural alternative. Suncoat’s new Nail Polish Remover is a corn- and soya-based formula that removes even the most stubborn polish, leaving nails hydrated and with a healthy sheen. Your nails will be back to tiptop condition in no time." Thank you Sunday Times! See Suncoat Natural Polish Remover at AllergyBestBuys here.

Unmade beds may keep us healthy. Research at Kingston University suggests that while an unmade bed may look scruffy it is also unappealing to house dustmites thought to cause asthma and other allergies. The average bed can house up to 1.5 million dustmites and their asthma-inducing allergen but they need warm, damp conditions to survive.

Researcher Dr Stephen Pretlove said: "We know that mites can only survive by taking in water from the atmosphere using small glands on the outside of their body. Something as simple as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from the sheets and mattress so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die.” Dr Matt Hallsworth, of the charity Asthma UK, said: 'House-dust mite allergen can be an important trigger for many people with asthma, but is notoriously difficult to avoid." Professor Andrew Wardlaw, of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology, agreed. He said: "Mites are very important in asthma and allergy and it would be good if ways were found to modifiy the home so that mite concentrations were reduced. It is true that mites need humid conditions to thrive and cannot survive in very dry (desert like) conditions. However, most homes in the UK are sufficiently humid for the mites to do well and I find it hard to believe that simply not making your bed would have any impact on the overall humidity."

Other measures, including using a dehumidifier, putting dustmite-proof covers over pillows and mattresses and hovering with a special vacuum cleaner to remove dustmite allergen are an important part of asthma management and allergy control. Medivac anti-allergy bedding is widely regarded as the brand leader and is available free of VAT if you or a member of your family has asthma, eczema, rhinitis or any condition made worse by exposure to dustmite allergen. The complete range of Medivac pillows, duvets and dustmite-proof covers is reduced in the AllergyBestBuys sale. Scroll through the bargains here.

Dr Chris Steele calls for action on coeliac disease. Earlier this month ITV This Morning doctor and complementary health supporter, Dr Chris Steele MBE handed in a petition to 10 Downing Street calling on the Government to help improve the diagnosis of coeliac disease. Dr Steele just been diagnosed with the condition.

The petition, signed by 8,783 people, is asking the Government to find the 500,000 people in the UK who are at risk of serious of damage to their health from undiagnosed coeliac disease by introducing a target for diagnosis of the disease in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) of the GP contract.

One in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease but only one in 8, or 12.5%, of these has been diagnosed. Currently GPs do not have a target in their contract to diagnose coeliac disease.

There is no cure or medication for coeliac disease and the only treatment is a life-long, strict gluten-free diet. Without a gluten-free diet, coeliac disease can lead to infertility, multiple miscarriages, osteoporosis and bowel cancer. The symptoms of coeliac disease range from the mild to the severe and vary between individuals. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, tiredness, anaemia, headaches, mouth ulcers, weight loss – but not in all cases, skin problems, depression, joint or bone pain and nerve problems. Dr Steele, ambassador for national charity Coeliac UK, endorses the BioCard Home Test for Coeliac disease as an important first step in diagnosing the condition. It is a simple and accurate DIY test and is available from AllergyBestBuys. For more information and to buy, please click here.
