Winter
Itch. Mrs E. from London rang to ask us for a remedy
for dry, itchy skin on her back that plagues her at this time
of year. Low winter temperatures, cold winds and dry indoor air
from central heating can all make the outer layer of skin dry
out and lead to “Winter Itch”, an annoying condition
resulting from a loss of skin moisture. We recommend warm, not
hot, baths and showers, using a dechlorinator to eliminate the
drying effects of this harsh chemical followed by a generous application
of TriCeram
Barrier Repair Emollient. The
Crystal Ball for the Bath or our Vitamin
C ShowerHead both offer instant and total removal of chlorines
and chloramines from the water. Click on the links for more details.

A
recent study* has found that using household cleaning
sprays and air fresheners, as little as once a week, raised the
risk of asthma. The Spanish study of more than 3500 people was
published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical
Care Medicine. It revealed that the risk of developing asthma
increased with frequency of cleaning and that air fresheners,
furniture sprays and glass cleaners were found to have the strongest
effect. (See our chemical-free alternatives, below). The researchers
suggested that exposure to cleaning products could account for
as much as 15%, or one in seven adult asthma cases. And they added
that on average the risk was 30-50% higher in people who regularly
used the sprays. Speaking to the BBC Victoria King of Asthma UK
said, “We know that up to 25% of people exposed to chemicals,
including cleaning sprays, at work will go on to develop occupational
asthma,”

Throw
out air freshening room sprays and invest in an AirFree
Air Steriliser. The Airfree
doesn’t simply filter out airborne allergens like dust,
pollen, pet dander, mould, germs and bacteria; it completely and
silently destroys them. Cool sterilised air is then released back
into the room.
|
|
| |
Our
two popular models of this excellent air steriliser the P80 and
P125 have now been joined by a third, the P60, which is perfect
for children’s bedrooms, studies or other smaller rooms
and is an affordable £149. Click here
for more details of all three Airfree
models and to buy. |

Nickel in mobiles. The handbook
for my mobile phone warns that the scroll key may contain nickel
and shouldn’t come into prolonged contact with the skin
because of the risk of nickel allergy. In fact, nickel is used
not just in the scroll key but also to enhance the appearance
of mobile phones, where it obviously comes into contact with
the skin. The risk of an allergic reaction is small but not
to be disregarded by anyone with nickel sensitivity.
You can check whether the coating of your
phone contains nickel with our Nickel
Solution test that detects the presence of nickel in everyday
items. As a general rule, avoid phones with shiny exteriors
– plastic is best. Using your phone in a carrying case
will increase protection and you could also consider a phone
that you can use hands-free. You should also avoid wearing Bluetooth
earpieces. Learn more about Nickel
Solution for nickel allergy here.

Volunteers
with Oral Allergy Syndrome are asked to contact journalist
David Hurst, who is writing an article for Woman’s Own magazine
to raise awareness of this difficult allergy. In this condition
swelling or itching of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat follows
immediately after contact with certain foods. It occurs in hay
fever sufferers and it is caused by a true allergy to certain
fresh fruits, nuts and raw vegetables. Reactions to the same foods
when cooked are less likely but can sometimes occur. In a few
people, symptoms may be caused by shrimp or egg, and for these
the risk of progression to a more severe reaction is greater.
People with Oral Allergy Syndrome caused by fruits or vegetables
often have an associated allergy to certain pollens, and may get
hay fever when these pollens are in season. If you suffer from
OAS and would be happy to talk to David about your condition please
call him on 07711 746218 or e-mail
him here. |
