How Toxic Are You? Channel 4 is looking for families with at least one child suffering from asthma, eczema or allergies to take part in a new TV programme. Presented by Sarah Beeny, the show will look at the possible health impact of synthetic chemicals present in the environment and in consumer products like soaps, shampoos and cosmetics. To take part the family should ideally be at the early stages of treating the condition and the children be aged between 10 – 15. The programme makers aim to test people for toxic chemicals and look at ways to detox them and reduce their exposure to toxic chemicals.

Allergic to latex?  If you have a latex allergy, be careful around poinsettias. These popular Christmas plants contain a milky sap similar to that found in rubber latex and can cause a severe allergic reaction. After touching the irritant some people have a bad skin rash so best advice is to use a drop of Gloves in a Bottle on exposed skin to provide a protective shield against contact dermatitis. Others who react to inhaling the irritant can suffer more serious problems like chest pain, drops in blood pressure, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
The allergen common to both latex and poinsettias is actually two proteins that have also been linked to banana, kiwi and chestnut allergies.

Asthma alert.  Bringing dusty decorations and artificial trees out of storage is one of the most frequent reasons given for asthma attacks in the home at this time of year. Get a non-sufferer to do the job for you. If you must tackle the task yourself, breathe through your nose not your mouth and wear a NasalAir Guard  to trap the dust and prevent it from reaching your airways. More details and to buy click here.

Christmas tree allergy.  Terpenes (mould spores) on fresh Christmas trees can trigger the sneezing, itching and hayfever-like symptoms of rhinitis or bring on an asthma attack or severe skin rash. Best advice is to hose down your tree and let it dry outside or give it a good going over with a leafblower to knock off spores and particulates before bringing it indoors.
Recently some people have been selling Leylandii Cypress trees as allergy-free Christmas trees, claiming that they are free of pollen. In fact they are not pollen-free trees, although their pollen is usually sterile. This does not necessarily make them non-allergenic.
