Is this The Worst Hayfever Plant in the World? |
Ragweed, common in North America, is regarded as the most allergenic of all plants because of the sheer volume of pollen it produces and the distance the pollen can travel on the wind.
Ragweed pollen carries the major allergen Amb a I (antigen E) which is far more irritant than grass or birch pollen. Anyone allergic to pollen of any type has a 75% chance of being allergic to Ragweed which grows from mid-August through to the first frost of winter.
In the warmer parts of Europe, Ragweed is now commonly found in sunflower fields and has become a serious problem in Russia, Croatia, France, Switzerland, some Nordic countries and Italy. The pollen can be transported up to 200 kilometres by the wind.
It has been introduced to Britain accidentally as a contaminant of products such as bird seed or chicken food and it can be found on rubbish tips, waste ground, docks, oil seed mills, farmland, and increasingly in gardens and allotments, mostly in the South of England.
If you are a hayfever sufferer or have asthma and come across Ragweed, dig it up and burn it or spray with a contact herbicide to destroy the plant. Do not purchase wild bird seed unless you know it is guaranteed free of contamination with Ragweed seeds.
Make sure you take steps to avoid weed pollen by wearing a mask, wraparound spectacles and a personal air purifier. Don´t forget to put window filters on your bedroom windows and to plug in an Auto Air Purifier in the car.
Other than the dreaded Ragweed, Artemisia species (e.g. mugwort) and Chenopodium (goosefoot) are now in flower in the UK and there will also be pollen in the air from Urticaceae (Nettle family), Rumex (dock) and Plantago (Plantain) during good weather.
If you are following our Hayfever Desensitisation Programme this is the time to be adding Mixed Weed and Shrub Pollens to your treatment.
GOOD NEWS FOR EYELID ALLERGY |
Eyelid rashes and allergies are a common problem and can be caused by a variety of allergic reactions, often due to the cosmetics or hair care products we use in everyday life.
Contact Dermatitis of the eyelids is particularly common, and is often caused by cosmetics that are directly applied to the eyelids, such as eye shadow or eye liner which often contain formaldehyde or quaternium-15 that can cause a rash. Eye cosmetics that have a green or blue colour may contain nickel or cobalt which are also common causes of contact dermatitis.
Mascara also can cause eyelid dermatitis, either from formaldehyde/quaternium-15 or from the nickel present in the mascara wand. Some eyelash curlers can cause eyelid dermatitis due to nickel.
If you discover you´re allergic to your mascaraor eyeliner, either check out the list of ingredients of High Street brands for the antigens mentioned above and choose one without them or check out our all-natural, hypoallergenic Mascara and new award-winning Eyeliner Pencil. But it's not just eye makeup that can cause problems. Chemicals used on the scalp including shampoo, conditioners, hair dye and styling products can all cause eyelid irritation. Hair spray can also cause eyelid allergies as it often ends up on the eyelids as you close your eyes when using it. Our Natural Chemical-free Hairspray solves this problem and is recommended for anyone sensitive to hairspray fumes too.
Eyelid dermatitis can also be caused by chemicals present on the hands, which are transferred to the eyelids when touching the face. Nail polish and the resins and hardeners used in nail extensions are common causes of contact dermatitis on the face for this reason. You can avoid this hazard with Suncoat water-based Natural Nail Polish.
Our gentle Dermasilk Therapeutic Eye Mask is specifically made to help soothe and heal the delicate areas of skin around the eyes and eyelids and is available to buy free of VAT if you suffer from contact dermatitis or eyelid allergy. For more information and to buy, Click here now.
Milk in Baked Foods Study |
The findings of recent research, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, indicate that exposing children to food that has milk baked in appears to help them outgrow milk allergy.
Scientists led by Dr Anna Nowak-Wegrzyn at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, studied 88 milk-allergic children and tested their tolerance to muffins, cookies, waffles and other foods that contained baked-in milk. Over the following 5 years researchers used a series of food challenges to introduce the children to foods that had progressively less-heated forms of milk. At the end of the study, 47 percent of the experimental group could tolerate unheated milk products, such as yogurt and ice cream, compared to 22 percent in a control group.
Researchers say the heat used in baking cause the proteins in milk to break down, which reduces the allergic potential. Dr Nowak-Wegrzyn said, “This study shows that many children with allergies do not need to completely avoid all milk products. It´s also an encouraging sign that through careful medical supervision, children can grow out of their allergies much quicker.”
You can test your child for Milk Allergy at home with the Milk Allergy Test Kit. Remember to re-test once a year. For more information and to buy, Click here now.
