THE SPREAD of an invasive moth species in London is causing scientists concern.

The Oak Processionary Moth not only defoliates trees, but can also cause a nasty allergic reaction in some people. Contact with the sharp toxic hairs of the moth can cause skin rashes characterised by an intense itch, itchy eyes and also trigger asthma attacks. Dr Brian McCloskey, director of the Health Protection Agency in London, said: “The symptoms can vary and some people may experience itchy patches of puffy skin, persistent itchy raised spots, irritant dermatitis and itchy eyes.”

Symptoms can be treated with antihistamines or skin treatments available from local pharmacies.

Dr Elaine Vickers, research relations manager at Asthma UK, detailed the dangers for asthma sufferers.

“The caterpillars pose a significant threat to people with asthma, as the toxin-containing bristles of the caterpillars can become airborne and trigger severe asthma attacks.”

Monique Simmonds, a biologist from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, is working on finding ways to combat the problem.

A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST can now predict if newborns will be at high risk of developing allergies as they grow older, thanks to to researchers at the University of Adelaide.

Immunologist Professor Tony Ferrante says a protein in the immune cells of newborns appears to be the greatest marker of whether they’ll struggle with allergies. Amounts of the cell signalling protein, called protein kinase C zeta, are much lower in children at risk of allergies and researchers say this test is much more accurate than family history questionnaires, or measuring the allergy antibody IgE.

The researchers are also looking at whether fish oil supplements given to both pregnant women and those who have just given birth can reduce the risks of the children developing allergies. “There is evidence that the levels of this important protein increase with fish oil supplementation to protect against allergy development,” Professor Ferrante says

The studies and clinical trials have been funded by the Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The season for Tree Pollens and Oil Seed Rape is now behind us but grass pollen, including Rye, Timothy and Cocksfoot continues to be released until the end of the month, so you may still get symptoms until September.
