The chemicals in fabric conditioners are made to stay in cloth fibres and slowly release over a long period. Sainsbury's Easy Iron Tumble Dryer Sheets, for example, boast that they will "fragrance the laundry for up to 6 days". Chemical analysis by Anderson Laboratories, reported in the May 2000 issue of the Journal of Toxicology & Environmental Health revealed that fabric conditioners emitted toluene, styrene, phenol, thymol, xylene and trimethylbenzene among other chemicals, many of which can cause acute respiratory tract irritations and inflammation.

So fabric softeners in either liquid or sheet form are not recommended for anyone with asthma, eczema, psoriasis or chemical sensitivity.
