POWERbreathe® is a revolutionary drug-free handheld inspiratory muscle
trainer specifically designed to increase lung capacity and reduce
breathlessness.
POWERbreathe Medic offers the same training for the diaphragm and lungs
as that used by top athletes, adapted to suit the needs of those with breathing
difficulties. It offers an evidence-based, drug-free treatment for patients with
dyspnoea
, especially those with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD),
emphysema, cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, neuromuscular disease,
Parkinson's and heart failure.
POWERbreathe Medic training requires just 15 minutes, twice daily for the
first 12 weeks; after that, maintenance training is just three times a week.
Benefits should be felt pretty quickly. Within a few days your
inspiratory muscles will feel stronger, within 3 weeks you will feel less
breathless and within 4 weeks your breathing will improve ( from clinical trials
published by Caine & McConnell, 1998; Voliantis et al., 2001a; Romer et al.,
2002 )
A drug-free alternative. Patients are increasingly looking
for alternatives to traditional drug-based treatments either because their
medication doesn’t appear to work, or because they fear its side-effects. Others
simply want to explore the addition of alternative treatments in an effort to
maximise control of their asthma.
Also, using oral steroid medication (not inhaled steroids) to control lung
inflammation in conditions such as asthma and emphysema has been shown to cause
weakness of the inspiratory muscles. This weakness can impair lung
function but it can be counteracted by inspiratory muscle training. (N.B.
inhaled steroids do not cause inspiratory muscle weakness.)
The POWERbreathe Medic applies the tried and trusted principles of resistance
(weight) training to the inspiratory muscles, and can be thought of as
'dumbbells for the diaphragm'. When muscles are overloaded regularly for a
period of a few weeks, they adapt, becoming stronger and more resistant to
fatigue. Activating stronger inspiratory muscles requires less effort during a
given task, hence breathlessness/dyspnoea is reduced.
In randomised, controlled trials on mild/moderate asthmatics, POWERbreathe
training
- reduced visits to GPs by
23%
- increased inspiratory muscle strength by up
to an average of 11% in just 3 weeks
- improved symptoms by up to
75%
- reduced emergency medication by
79%
- reduced work/school absences by
95%
- reduced emergency hospitalisations by
75%
In trials with patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,
POWERbreathe training
- showed improvements in inspiratory muscle
strength of 55% (Newall et al., 1998)
- showed improvements in endurance of
86%
- showed improvements in quality of life by
21%
- showed improvements in dyspnoea by 36%
(Inspiratory muscle training improves lung function and reduces exertional
dyspnoea in mild/moderate asthmatics - McConnell, A. K., M. P. Caine, et al.
(1998). Clinical Science 95(2): 4P.)

What You Say
"We have been using the POWERbreathe Medic for over a year as part of the pulmonary rehab programme and our patients have found it to be of great benefit and enjoy using it. We have good compliance and have found an improvement in patients' fitness. We will continue to use the POWERbreathe Medic as an adjunct to our programme."
Emma Hamilton, West Cumbria Respiratory Team, Workington Community Hospital
"An excellent evidence base in patients with lung disease."
Nursing in Practice
"After I developed asthma, I bought a POWERbreathe and cannot believe the improvement of my breathing. I am going to see my asthma nurse to discuss coming off my preventer."
T. Dure, UK
"The main attraction is that it takes only a few minutes and it is so flexible in terms of when and where you can use it. As an asthma sufferer it has proved invaluable in making sure I am getting the maximum benefit from every breat."
Rob Birchall, UK
"Described by scientists as "dumbells for our diaphragm."
The Times
"I can't thank you enough. I have had asthma for 16 years and this is the first year I haven't had a chest infection."
Mrs D. Bailey
"POWERbreathe is one of the best things I have done for my asthma. Exercise is easier, I do not get the feeling of breathlessness and I am sleeping better. Thank you."

"I suffer from cystic fibrosis and eight weeks ago Purchased the Wellness POWERbreathe. After using it every day I feel great. It's like having new lungs."

"My asthma has been getting steadily worse since my late 20's. I was becoming so short of breath I was having to use my inhaler two or three times a day. I did the breathing exercises for five minutes every morning and I could feel my lungs were having to work extra hard to breathe through the mouthpiece. Like many asthmatics, not only was it hard to draw breath but I also found it hard to push the air out of my lungs. But both became much easier within a couple of weeks. Not only was I not getting breathless on my runs, even everyday tasks like walking and going up stairs became easier. I went from needing to use my inhaler once or more a day to practically not using it at all."

"The POWERbreathe machine exercises your lungs and strengthens breathing muscles. I used it for four weeks without feeling any different. Then one day I was running on the treadmill in the gym and had a whole conversation with one of the instructors, which I could never do before. I'm off preventative medication now and only use ventolin for my asthma."

"I bought the POWERbreathe hoping the other reviews I'd read were right. They were! Easy and practical to use, I have only been using it for a few weeks and already I feel measurably better. Yes measurably because I tested myself on a peak-flow meter and am getting much better results. Practically I have found doing physical activities that much easier too. For me this has been money well spent! I'd certainly recommend it."
